Plan your partition maintenance to avoid costly movement of large amounts of data. The easiest way to accomplish this is to plan so that only empty partitions are split and merged. Nonempty partitions can still be split or merged efficiently, but only if you are careful to avoid unnecessary data movement. With SPLIT, the newly created partition is the one that includes the specified boundary value (LEFT or RIGHT); data will be moved into the new partition as appropriate for the new boundaries. SQL Server can leverage existing indexes to determine what, if any, data needs to be relocated. Consequently, splitting a nonempty partition can be nearly instantaneous, as long as no data needs to be moved and a useful index on the partitioning column exists. MERGE performance is also proportional to the amount of data moved. The partition that includes the merged boundary is the one removed, and all data will be moved from the removed partition into the adjacent retained one.

Always update statistics after a partition switch. SQL Server maintains statistics at the table level rather than the partition level; therefore index statistics are immediately stale after a switch and can result in suboptimal plans.
