When delta CRLs are used, the client keeps the main CRL in its cache and downloads new delta CRLs. The lists are combined when the certificate verifier seeks to validate presented certificates. Figure 2-16 shows this process. When a new main CRL is issued, all the revoked certificates published in delta CRLs will be in the new main CRL. The old delta CRLs are no longer needed and are deleted. The client application must understand delta CRLs to use them. (All applications that use Crypto-API in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 can use delta CRLS.) However, if a client cannot use delta CRLs, the client can still use the main CRL in the nor mal way. The client just will not be able to see newly revoked certificates until the old CRL expires and a new CRL is downloaded. Figure 2-16 shows how the use of delta CRLs by the CA is interpreted in a delta CRL aware application vs. one that is not. As you can see, at time t1 both clients download a current main CRL. At time t2, a new delta CRL is published that includes, among others, the revoked Jeff user certificate. At this time, client A, which is delta CRL aware, downloads the delta CRL. Client B, which is not delta CRL aware does nothing. At time t3, a new main CRL is published, which includes the information on the revoked Jeff certificate. At time t4 the old main CRL validity period ends. Both client A and B download the new main CRL. During the time between time t2 and t4, client B has no knowledge of the revoked Jeff certifi cate. If the certificate were presented, it might be validated. However, client A, which downloaded the delta CRL, would not validate the certificate.

Tattoos become more problematic when you upgrade to Windows XP from an earlier version of Windows. It's also a problem when you deploy Windows XP on a network that doesn't have Active Directory but uses System Policy, and then deploy Active Directory down the line. The upgrade process doesn't remove System Policy settings from the registry during an upgrade, so those settings remain. The shotgun approach is to remove the following keys from each computer's registry and each user's profile hive before upgrading to Windows XP; the surgical approach is to remove individual policies, but that's too tedious: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies HKCU\Software\Policies HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies How you remove these keys during the upgrade is the question. This isn't an issue for disk images because the problem occurs only during an upgrade. If technicians are visiting desktops during the upgrade, and I hope they aren't doing that, they can remove these keys manually. Otherwise, run the Windows XP setup program from a batch file or script. Then you can precede the command that starts the setup program with the commands that remove these keys. Listing 15 4 is an example of an INF file that removes them. To run this INF file from a batch file, save it in a file called Tattos.inf; then add the command %SystemRoot% \System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 Tattoos.inf to the batch file that starts the Windows XP installation. As you design the revocation process, think about the following things:

Consider that some applications will not benefit from the use of delta CRLs because some legacy applications do not know how to use them. If no appli cations can use the delta CRLs, setting them up might be pointless and might even do harm because the use of delta CRLs might result in longer times between the publication of regular CRLs. If the use of delta CRLs will not change the publication period of CRLS, and if new operating systems and applications are planned in the near future, it does no harm to include the use of delta CRLs in your design. Understand that all applications do not use revocation checking. For some processes, such as checking SSL certificates on the Internet, it may be quite impractical, and for others, it is just not built into the application. Other applications might have revocation checking built in, but they might respond differently if a valid CRL cannot be located. Some of these applica tions might fail to validate the certificate if the CRL is not valid or cannot be located; other applications issue warning messages that empower users to accept certificates anyway; and still others might silently accept certificates. Knowing what applications are used on the network and how they respond is important in the design of PKI. If certificate revocation checking cannot be used, some other methodology must be relied on for example, user account expiration. If the user s account has expired, it won t matter if his certificate is still valid he still will not be able to access resources on the network. If applications cannot use CRLs, perhaps other applications can be selected.
